Ultima Weapon:
Ultima Weapon is a secret boss in FF 8, the 2nd hardest in the
game. This beast has one-hit kills and very powerful magic, you’ll need
every advantage to beat him. Actually he’s not that hard but he’s much
tougher than every other boss you’ve faced. His defeat is the goal of
the Deep Sea Research Center quest, which gives you some great rewards.
Before trying this quest you should level up to 100 and get your
character’s ultimate weapons, this isn’t necessary but it will help.
You should also stock up on Auras, they let your characters use their
limit breaks without having to be near death. You can draw them from
the last fight with Seifer or refine one fury fragment into five. To
start this quest fly to the bottom-left of the map to find the Deep Sea
Research Center. Inside you’ll find out why you needed to level up,
there are all kinds of tough monsters. You’ll see a blue radiating
core, if you walk while the core isn’t glowing you won’t get in a
fight. Walk while it glows and you’ll run into a fight every step. Once
you get to the core a voice will ask you 3 questions, get one wrong and
you’ll fight a Red Dragon and then get another chance, get one right
and you’ll fight a Red Dragon and move on to the next. Here are the
answers in order: “It’s not our will to fight”, “Never”, and the 3rd
hidden option “None of your business”. You’ll get into a fight with
Bahamut, the king of GFs. He’s not too tough, use Aura to put him out
in a minute. After getting your new GF they’ll be a hole you can’t
enter yet, go back to the Ragnarok and into the conference room. When
you come back you’ll be able to go into the hole to that leads to
Ultima Weapon. Now you have a puzzle to beat. There are 6 floors, to
progress you’ll need to give the machines some steam power. You only
have 20 units to get to the bottom. Here are the solutions:
-Solution #1 (without Zell)
Floor 1- 4 units spent automatically
Floor 2- spend 2 units
Floor 3- use the monitor to open the steam room, use the station to recharge 7 units then use 1 unit to get down
Floor 4- spend 1 unit
Floor 5- spend 1 unit
Floor 6- spend 4 units to open the last door
-Solution #2 (with Zell)
Floor 1- 4 units spent automatically
Floor 2- spend 1 unit
Floor 3- spend 1 unit
Floor 4- spend 1 unit
Floor 5- spend 1 unit
Floor 6- let Zell handle the machine
Now you’ll have to run down a long path to the
bottom. You can’t avoid the fights down here, and the monsters get
tougher as you get lower. When you get to the bottom use the secret
save point and give your remaining steam power to face Ultima Weapon.
I said Ultima was easy but he’s still a threat,
don’t underestimate him. Before fighting be sure set at least one
character with draw, during the fight that character should draw the
Eden GF from Ultima. To start the fight summon Cerberus or just cast
Triple on everybody. Next cast Aura on everybody with Triple and pummel
him with limit breaks. If he kills any member cast Full-Life on him/her
and keep up the Aura. He should fall pretty quick, if you use the Lion
Heart limit break he’ll die instantly.
